The Minds Behind the Games Interviews With Cult and Classic Video Game Developers Studies in Gaming Patrick Hickey Jr Foreword by Brett Weiss 9781476671109 Books Reviews
- This book is for both the casual and hardcore gamer. If you want to know the story behind the struggle of how your favorite games came to be realized, then most definitely buy this book. I immediately went to the Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego and Mortal Kombat sections and enjoyed them both immensely.
- I am not a gamer but this book is so well written and takes you through an era when technology was new. You are taken in by the author's passion and can't help but enjoy the journey.
- This is a book that must be read even if you are not a fan of video games. The author places attention to every word he writes with each page seeming like a mater painter̢۪s canvas. This is one terrific piece of non fiction and I enjoyed every turn of the page. I highly recommend to anyone who is seeking a deeper understanding of some of the most influential games in the industry̢۪s history. The author is brilliant with each passage of this non fiction masterwork. Can̢۪t wait to read his next book.
- Do you like video games? Do you like going behind the scenes to see how things came to be? Do you like to be entertained? Then why have you not bought this book?!?!?
- Absolutely amazingly well researched and narrated. Many of these interviews will be public record gaming history in years to come. Enjoyed every minute of this book and gleaned a lot of useful information for game design and heaps of fun game play facts.
- This book is a masterpiece of information and written so well even someone who is not a die hard gamer will have trouble putting down. Definitely one that even if you have a passing interest in gaming you should pick up!
- You don̢۪t have to be a gamer to read a book on gaming and enjoy it ! This book brang me back to my childhood of growing up with these games and opened my eyes to finally get the view on the original makers behind these games the ideas, amount of work and imagination put into these games is amazing. Great book & enjoyed it !
- Hickey interviews a series of video game developers who worked on a variety of games from the 80s and 90s. His approach isn̢۪t about simple fanboy-ism (though he̢۪s obviously a fan of these games). His approach isn̢۪t to retread paths that have been walked before, the results of which can be found re-published everyone online. No, Patrick Hickey Jr. leverages his unique interviewing and writing expertise (he̢۪s the Assistant Director of the Journalism program at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn, NY) to document the untold stories of video game development.
You aren’t simply given a bound collection of transcribed interviews. Rather, you are given history and first-hand accounts of the origins of the games we love. This is important because those games we love, from the 80s and 90s, weren’t discussed with the same fervor and breadth that games are today. â€Å“Games journalism†was barely a concept when many of these games were made. As Hickey states in the book’s preface â€Å“In the end, this book is about creating a platform for developers to discuss their projects and to swoon you.â€
Yay for that. Yay for Patrick Hickey Jr. and his Minds Behind the Games Interviews with Cult and Classic Video Game Developers.
