An estimated 150,000 people per year try heroin, most of them are under the age of 26 and relative newbies to drugs. The stories of those within these jaw-dropping numbers are the tether needed to wrap our collective minds around this problem. Author Jude Hassan’s memoir, Suburban Junky From Honor Roll to Heroin Addict, is a personal account of his journey from a smart, well-loved kid with great potential to a fear-filled addict and how he found his way back. In Suburban Junky, Hassan was the last kid anyone would imagine a junkie. He had loving and attentive parents, was a great student, his father was a drug counselor; he knew all he was supposed to know. When his family moved to the suburbs just in time for freshman year, Hassan was more lonely than ever, shy and eating lunch alone. When a boy his age finally approached him and offered him drugs, it was all it took. Though he knew better and had all the tools to resist, his desire to fit in became an unhealthy obsession. Hassan quickly went from smoking pot to experimenting with other drugs. He eventually landing on heroin. It took an enforced detox in a jail cell and his father’s cancer to give him the will to climb out of the deep, dark hole he’d lived in for six years.

"I chose to read this book so I could learn more about the heroin/drug addiction both of my nephews struggle with. Their stories are similar to the author's story--they come from a loving family, were both talented and funny and kind hearted kids until the drugs took over their lives. This book gave me hope that one day they too will see the light and choose to get clean."

  • I loved this book and I can't quit telling everyone that I meet about it. I read it quickly and that says a lot because I'm a busy mom of three and always start books and it takes forever to actually read them and most I never actually finish. I finished this one in a few days. It is so well done and SCARY at the same time. As a stepmom of twin boys in 8th grade and knowing high school is just around the corner and my boys are in this same school district - it scares the holy tar out of me. That being said, I find myself more equipped and realize I need to be asking questions, checking texts and even though they are great boys - they can fall in a hole and it's our job as parents to make sure that doesn't happen. Thank you for this book. I loved it!
  • Well written but rather depressing as are most books about junkies. The amazing thing about this genera is that they come through alive. Kind of like a soldier in war who makes it home with a few bumps and bruises but that is all. In the meanwhile, he rips apart his family and relationships except those with other junkie friends to shreds. I really admire what the protagonists mother went through and hung in there with dignity and unconditional love. It is a good read but be ready to get into the dirt and grime to what it means to be a junkie.

Incidentally, the book takes place for the most part in St. Louis MO where I spent my younger years also in the suburbs. I can recall East St. Louis looking like post WW11 Germany. The inner city is not a place for the meek to enter and these kids from the suburbs did it regularly to score.
  • This book is a real page turner! So ironic that his parents moved him from the city to the suburbs to avoid him getting into drugs and a bad crowd, and that is where his addiction started. Also ironic is that he is the son of a drug counselor. The theme of this book is that peer pressure is an enormous and unfortunate influence. His story is sad at times but also has a happy ending. A must read!
  • I loved this book b/c it brought me back to the days when i was using heroin. Even though our stories are different, they told the same story which heroin kills and u end up doing things that u never thought u would do to get that drug. But im so glad that Jude got his life together. Some people are not that lucky
  • I read this book really quick which is a sign of a good book. I didn't like the use of slang though. I just didn't think it suited where it was used. It was thrown in throughout the book. Other than that it was a really good read and the slang didn't wreck the book or anything. I would recommend this book. -) Thanks for telling your story Jude.
  • As a psychologist I work a lot with youth who are struggling with heroin addiction. This book was really hard to put down. My clients also felt that they could relate and learn a lot from this authors' struggle with heroin. His first hand account is riveting-I am so glad I discovered this book. This is a must read for anyone who knows someone, or whothemselves is struggling with heroin.
  • great book on the struggle of how some become addicted, not all of us who become addicts become addicted in the way most non addicts think we do by growing up in broken homes, living on the streets, & being taught from family that the use of drugs and alcohol are normal. Also details the struggle through addiction, & relapse and recovery in a very real and true light.
